Wayne Brown, known as the Beast, saw Lily Jones at a party when she was 19 years old and fell instantly in love. He decided then and there that she will belong to him. Lily is a young woman who’s neglected by her family and desperate for affection. And yet she continues to slave over family chores and cut down spending in an effort to help the family’s dire financial straits.
Upon discovering her family’s situation, Wayne seizes the opportunity. In exchange for money to bail them out and a monthly allowance, he wants Lily to agree to be his wife. Lily, being the obedient daughter, accepts.
“’What if I walk out of here?’ Lily tested him.‘Then my heart will go with you wherever you want to go, but I’ll warn you now, you’ll never find a man out there who’ll love you the way I do.’”
Who wouldn’t forgive the guy everything?
The plot and characters of Sam Crescent's BLACKMAILED BY THEBEAST are very reminiscent of the Harlequin Presents line, especially the older stories. Wayne Brown is very Alpha male. He’s dominant, controlling, and sometimes even cruel. Lily is his polar opposite. She is an extremely naïve, innocent, and trusting woman. And although she initially marries him for her family’s sake, their developing relationship is very sweet and believable. Despite Lily’s reluctance, Adam makes a place for himself in her heart. Their sexual relationship also comes across as natural, rather than forced. Indeed, it is very sexy and spicy. The climax at the end was pleasant, if expected.
BLACKMAILED BY THE BEAST is a short but well-written story about love, possession, and passion with loss, despair, and pain thrown in--the perfect romance. I enjoyed reading about Adam and Lily. The epilogue leaves me impatient for the second story.
