Reena Harrison has come from America to live with her uncle in England at the age of 14, while her father puts her through Madame Bellwater’s School for the Deportment of Fine Young Ladies. It was here at such a young, tender age that she met the man she would love for the rest of her life. Of course, such a handsome man would be married!
Four years later Joshua Sinclair has come to Reena’s 18th birthday party being hosted for her by her uncle. Joshua has been in mourning for a year now because his wife died in childbirth. He lost both his wife and his child. Reena feels such desolation for him. She has carried a torch for him for the last four years even though she hasn’t seen him much because she’s
been away at school.
Will Reena have to settle for one of her many suitors, or will Joshua come out of mourning and find true love with Reena?
April Dawn’s CRUSHING DESIRE is the story of a young girl’s love that begins at a very early age. This story transports readers to a time when young girls are given major parties
for occasions such as 18th birthdays--a "coming out" when they reach the age of courtship. These parties were much more formal than most parties of today. Social etiquette required girls to be formally introduced to young men of courting age. When the heroine Reena is introduced at the age of 14 to Joshua Sinclair, a young man who is a few years older and already married, the story's kernel of a romance pops at her cousin’s engagement party.
Reena experiences nervousness when she first lays eyes on Joshua and is almost too tongue-tied to tell him her name when her uncle introduces them. I have felt that nervousness and relived it in this story. I really liked the parts of the story where Reena is visited by her suitors and could almost imagine being the one who is being courted. However, I especially enjoyed the parts where Reena visited with Joshua, knowing how she felt about him and how
she couldn’t reveal the truth of her feelings. When Reena is finally given her chance to make Joshua fall for her, I was eager for that to happen. This opportunity occurs when Joshua offers to help Reena get back to America to visit her ailing father. They embark on a freighter. And the fireworks start!
The voyage is full of raw emotion and sexual tension flowing on that journey. Even parts of the story that were thrilling in aspects other than a sexual nature felt real. April Dawn's use of words and descriptions can really throw you into the thick of the story. While I could put myself in Reena's shoes from the beginning and enjoyed being able to relate to the storyline, I feel the first part was a little lengthier than necessary. If the author had gotten to the heart of the story sooner, the depth of the central storyline could have been drawn out a little more. All in all, CRUSHING DESIRE is very well-written and full of interesting historical detail.
