Determined to make a new life for herself, Maddie Bowers travels to her late grandfather's cabin in Wyoming. When she was a little girl, she was first introduced to her grandfather's wolf and is delighted to find the wolf still living in the nearby woods, and that the wolf remembers her.
Remus has known Maddie was his mate since she was young. But a tragic accident and a cruel doctor kept them apart. Now that she is back, it's up to him to help her control her secret abilities and accept the truth about her heritage.
The love between Maddie and Remus will be threatened by a jealous woman and Maddie's brother's partnership with the evil doctor that kept her confined for so many years. Can Maddie and Remus realize their destiny before it's too late?
Missy Martine's Discovering Her Wolfen Heritage is quite enjoyable. After all she has been through, strong and determined is a good way to describe the heroine, Maddie. Beginning when a boating accident unleashes her strange and frightening ability that scares her and her family and allows the evil Dr. Constantine to intervene to convince her family she should be institutionalized--for everyone's good. She lived scared and alone for years. Also, before her accident, Maddie was introduced to a wolf by her grandfather, never realizing this wolf would one day become her mate. Remus is that wolf, but knows he must wait to claim her, knowing that when Maddie finally comes back into his life, he must win her love and trust. As Maddie and Remus build their fragile relationship many obstacles stand in their way, from a she-wolf to Maddie’s brother Michael who has been duped by Dr. Constantine. When the damn breaks and Maddie finally allows Remus more than just a few stolen touches, the flood of emotions will have you feeling as if the earth is trembling from the unleashed passion. Add in that Maddie must also learn all that was kept from her about her family's heritage and you have an enjoyable story.
Maddie is drawn to Remus but doesn’t trust her feelings because she has nothing to compare them to. She has never been with a man before, and Remus is all man. As much as she is drawn to him, she is as much afraid he will be to controlling. That she's already had--enough of others controlling her every move. She needs time. She has not, after all, been free for long, and she must adjust to this freedom. But will she be given that time? There are other forces in play that may keep Maddie from having that time to herself. Maddie’s growth
from a scared and timid girl into a woman who will be able to hold her own out in the world grows with each turn of the story's pages.
Remus shows what a true Alpha male should be--strong enough to understand when to hold back and man enough to know when not to, yet, also knowing, regardless of what others may think, understanding when dominance is warranted in all aspects as the Alpha of the pack should. The love that develops between these two is a struggle but worth ever scratch. Who could not fall for Remus or his bond with his brothers? The protection they offer Maddie is from the heart, whether that danger be from a she-wolf, the evil doctor, or Maddie’s own brother who has fallen victim to the doctor’s lies. But beware it’s not all smooth sailing for these two. There are those who want nothing more than to keep them apart and will not stop until they succeed. My only small grouse is that the dialogue can sound a little old-fashioned from time to time and that the subplots felt choppy but could have flowed together better. Overall, I enjoyed Maddie and Remus' story as they fight back against those who threaten to tear them apart.
